PCC announces Scott Green as new Chief Constable of West Midlands Police

Birmingham: The Police and Crime Commissioner Simon Foster says Scott Green will be the new Chief Constable of West Midlands Police.

It comes after Mr Green’s appointment was confirmed by the region’s Police and Crime Panel following a meeting on Monday afternoon (28th Sept).

Mr Green has been serving as Acting Chief Constable of West Midlands Police since January 2026 and has now been selected by the Commissioner as the person he wants to lead the force on a permanent basis.

Simon Foster made the decision following a rigorous selection process. Candidates were interviewed by young people from the region, stakeholders, police officers and staff, before being interviewed by a panel chaired by the PCC.

Police and Crime Commissioner Simon Foster said: “I am pleased to announce Scott Green as the new Chief Constable of West Midlands Police.

“I have appointed him following a rigorous selection process.

“He is an experienced police officer who has already proven he is capable of leading the second largest force in the country.

“I expect the new Chief Constable to deliver on the commitments in my Police and Crime Plan, to deliver for the people and communities of the West Midlands, to build on the progress that has been made and to ensure continuous improvement.”

Mr Green joined West Midlands Police as the Deputy Chief Constable in April 2023 before becoming Acting Chief Constable in January 2026.

Chief Constable Scott Green said: “I am truly delighted to be appointed as the Chief Constable of West Midlands Police and recognise what an honour and privilege it is to become the force’s tenth Chief Constable.

“I joined the force in 2023 and during this time West Midlands Police has made incredible improvements to how we protect people from harm, responding quickly when people are most in need, to how we investigate crimes, arresting more people than ever before, and bring offenders to justice, achieving more positive outcomes for victims. However, we must not be complacent, and I acknowledge there is still more we can do to keep improving.

“It is of the utmost importance to me that we listen and engage with communities to ensure we focus on matters impacting most on local people. We will do this through our continued focus on building the trust of the communities we serve.

“West Midlands Police is one of the fastest improving forces in the country and I am thrilled to lead the organisation and provide the outstanding services the public of the West Midlands rightly deserve.

“With the incredible workforce we have, I know we can continue to prevent crime, protect people and build trust, meeting the challenges of modern-day policing.

“I am committed to doing everything in my power to serve the public of the West Midlands to my very best ability and provide a service they can be rightly proud and confident in.”

Scott Green started his police career in South Yorkshire Police in the 1990s, serving in uniform and CID at various ranks, including working for the forerunner of the National Counter Terrorism Policing network. His last role in South Yorkshire Police was as a Chief Superintendent, District Commander for Barnsley.

He was successful at the 2019 Senior Police National Assessment Centre, graduated from the Strategic Command Course in 2020 and was subsequently appointed as an Assistant Chief Constable in Staffordshire Police with responsibility for ensuring 999, 101 and online crime reporting ran efficiently, and emergency calls were responded to promptly and effectively.

In September 2021 he moved to Greater Manchester Police (GMP) as part of a new chief officer team brought together to help lead GMP out of Engaged Status (often referred to as ‘Special Measures’). During his time in GMP he was responsible for all ten policing districts across Greater Manchester and was part of the chief officer team that led the force out of Engaged Status.

He then moved to West Midlands Police as Deputy Chief Constable where he was responsible for the force’s performance. He was part of the chief officer team that led West Midlands Police out of special measures in an unprecedented nine months and 27 days – the fastest of any police force.

Mr Green is an experienced Public Order Gold Commander, Multi-Agency Gold Incident Commander (MAGIC), and Specialist Strategic Firearms Commander.
