Coventry: The Ravidassia community center hosted an event aimed at raising awareness about diabetes and mental health.
The event was organized by Mercia Lions Club and Coventry Step to Community Progress, with support from Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust, NHS Coventry and Warwickshire, and Diabetes UK.
The distinguished guest was Mr. Singh, the Lord Mayor of Coventry. During the event, the keynote speakers and organisers emphasised that the number of people living with diabetes in the UK has reached 5 million, with an estimated 850,000 individuals unaware of their condition. Without proper care and support, individuals with all types of diabetes face the risk of developing serious complications. Alarming statistics were shared, including the fact that every week diabetes leads to 184 amputations, over 770 strokes, 590 heart attacks, and 2,300 cases of heart failure.
The event also shed light on mental health concerns. It was highlighted that 1 in 6 people experience common mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. Furthermore, 1 in 11 individuals over the age of 65 suffer from dementia, 3 in 100 people experience depression, and 1 in 5 people have had suicidal thoughts. Shockingly, 1 in 15 people have attempted suicide, with women more likely to have suicidal thoughts and men being three times more likely to take their own lives. In fact, suicide is now the leading cause of death for men under 50.
The event’s message emphasised the importance of taking action before it’s too late. It encouraged attendees to get tested for diabetes, adopt a healthy lifestyle, and educate themselves about mental health to recognise symptoms in those close to them.
