High Commissioner commends professionalism and bravery of Pakistan Armed Forces
The High Commission commemorated the Defence Day of Pakistan at its premises on 30 September 2019. The Reception was attended by Defence Attachés from over 50 countries, mostly accompanied by their spouses, members of the Ministry of Defence, representatives of defence industry, veterans of Pakistan Armed Forces, Pakistani community and think tanks notables.
On this occasion rich tributes were paid to the Armed Forces and the people of Pakistan who rendered great sacrifices while protecting Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Speaking on the occasion, the High Commissioner, Mohammad Nafees Zakaria, said Pakistan takes pride in its highly professional and brave Armed Forces which are not only dedicated to serving the country but have made great contributions under UN peace keeping operations as well. He lauded the determination and strategy of the Armed Forces of Pakistan in defeating the menace of terrorism in the country.
The High Commissioner briefed the guests about humanitarian crisis in Indian Occupied Kashmir (IOK) and said the siege since 5th August has its political, humanitarian and regional security implications. He also highlighted the efforts of Prime Minister Imran Khan in raising awareness about the IOK situation in his recent address at the UNGA.
Giving an overview of the economic opportunities in Pakistan, Mr Zakaria said Pakistan is a market of 220 million consumers. He invited the international investors to take advantage of the economic opportunities and affordable and abundant skilled human resource in Pakistan. He said uplifting country’s economy is Prime Minister’s main focus and to that end, numerous policy initiatives have been taken to facilitate investment.
The High Commissioner said Pakistan-UK relations are historical and marked by strong political goodwill. However, he said, there is still enough room to enhance bilateral economic cooperation.
In his welcome remarks, Commodore Jamal Alam, Defence & Naval Adviser shed light on the importance of Defence Day. He said:
“On 6 September 1965, people of Pakistan demonstrated an unprecedented national unity and stood firmly behind their valiant Armed Forces to thwart an attempt of aggression by the enemy. Our soldiers, sailors and airmen courageously defended their motherland. I salute the heroes who rendered sacrifices in Pakistan’s fight against external aggression and the ongoing struggle against the menace of terrorism and violent extremism. Today, we make a resolve to defend the country against all threats.”
Paintings relating to defence forces of Pakistan were exhibited on the occasion. A violinist also performed to the tunes of popular national songs and received applause from the guests. Short videos reflecting the capabilities of the Armed Forces of Pakistan were also shown.
