Birmingham: A total of 15 parks and open spaces maintained by Birmingham City Council have been named as Green Flag Award winners for 2020.
The scheme, operated by Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for their management across the United Kingdom and around the world.
Across the country more than 2,000 sites are on the roll of honour this year – a year in which park use in the city doubled during the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic.
Cllr John O’Shea, Cabinet Member for Street Scene and Parks at Birmingham City Council, said: “Our parks and open spaces are some of our greatest assets – they are key to the health, wellbeing and environment of the whole city.
“The Green Flag Awards recognise the efforts of all concerned with the maintenance and stewardship of these sites – our parks staff and the volunteers who put in so much time and work to look after their local areas.
“On behalf of the council, I would like to thank everyone who has done their bit at all these sites and the others across the city without Green Flags, because each and every one of our open spaces are integral to the fabric of Birmingham.”
And in celebration of this year’s awards, the Library of Birmingham will be lit green from dusk this evening (14 October 2020).
