India: On Saturday, September 28, 2024, King Gurcharan Mall BEM was awarded an “Honorary Doctorate Degree” by WHRP at a prestigious ceremony held at the Ashok Hotel in New Delhi. The honor was presented by esteemed dignitaries, including Syed S. Hussain (Former Textile Minister of India), Manoj Tiwari (Member of Parliament), and Samrat Choudhary (Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar), in recognition of his exceptional contributions to Punjabi arts and education over the past 56 years.
A trailblazer in promoting Punjabi culture globally, Dr. Gurcharan Mall has played a pivotal role in advancing both the arts and education. Since the 1980s, he has been a dedicated educator, teaching in schools, colleges, and universities, and mentoring the next generation of musicians and artists. His notable achievements include founding G Mall’s School of Asian Dancing in 1983 – the first of its kind outside India – and co-authoring the first-ever books on Bhangra and the Dhol drum. His impact on music education also includes producing educational DVDs and developing the first “Dhol Syllabus” alongside Harjinder Matharu and Sutal Arts.
In addition to his educational contributions, Dr. Mall has been actively involved in charitable work, continually inspiring others through his leadership in the arts. This “Honorary Doctorate” is a testament to his enduring dedication to preserving and promoting Punjabi arts on a global scale.
