The city’s network of five Household Recycling Centres (HRCs) remain open despite the second national lockdown starting today (November 5) – but residents are being asked to minimise their visits.
This local request is in line with the latest national guidance on travel during the latest stage of the COVID-19 response.
All visits must be pre-booked, as has been the case for several months, via the Veolia website.
Waste services, as has also been the case throughout the pandemic, will continue as normally scheduled. Anyone with COVID-19 related waste is asked to double bag such materials and to only put them in their bin after three days (72 hours) have elapsed.
Again, we ask that people help us by wiping down their bin handles before they put them out for collection and again after they have been emptied. This will help minimise any risk of transmitting the virus.
Cllr John O’Shea, Cabinet Member for Street Scene and Parks at Birmingham City Council, said: “The risks posed by coronavirus have never gone away, so we are using the second lockdown as a prompt to remind people how to safely handle their household waste.
“Our hardworking crews have been doing a phenomenal job since the onset of the pandemic, as shown by the messages of support from residents that have poured in. If everyone does their bit, it will help keep those workers as safe as possible.
“We’re also able to keep our Household Recycling Centres open. We’ve set them up to work in a COVID-secure way, to keep staff and users safe and the online booking system is working well. Given the infection numbers locally and nationally, we would ask that residents seriously consider if they do need to book a visit. The sites are open all year round, so there are plenty of opportunities to dispose of non-urgent waste.”
It has also been confirmed that bulky waste collections will continue as scheduled, with new booking slots regularly added. More details can be found on the council’s bulky waste webpage.
