Leicester: The launch event for the Virtual Bosnia Room took place on December 4th at De Montfort University (DMU) in Leicester, unveiling an innovative and transformative educational tool. Developed in collaboration by Cardiff and Vale College, mXreality, and Dr. Kim Sadique at DMU, the Virtual Bosnia Room is part of the Anti-Racist Wales Action Plan.
It responds to the Welsh Senedd’s Equality and Social Justice Committee Report (2024), “Action not Words: Towards an Antiracist Wales by 2030”. This pioneering resource offers educators a powerful anti-racism teaching tool, fostering active global citizenship and delivering impactful lessons on equality and social justice in Wales and beyond.
The Virtual Bosnia Room immerses users in the history of the Bosnian genocide through a virtual representation of the Battery Factory, the UN Dutchbat Base, and the Srebrenica Memorial Centre—exploring the events before, during, and after the genocide.
The experience is enriched with music by Divanhana, art by Robert McNeil MBE, and excerpts from Untold Killing Season 1: Srebrenica, creating a deeply immersive educational journey. The event was attended by notable guests, including His Excellency Mr. Osman Topčagić, Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the United Kingdom; Anes Cerić, Manager of Bosnia UK Network; and Abi Carter, Co-Chair of Remembering Srebrenica Wales. Professor Simon Oldroyd, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Sustainability) and Dean of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at DMU, delivered the welcome address.
A recorded message from Mr. Vanja Filipović, Head of Mission of Bosnia and Herzegovina to NATO, was also shared with attendees. This groundbreaking initiative marks a significant step forward in promoting anti-racist education and global understanding..
