The fringe event at the Labour Party Annual Conference 2019 in Brighton
Brighton: Kashmir is a legal, constitutional and historic issue of Self Determination. Both India and Pakistan need to resolve it according to the wishes of the people of Kashmir. The ongoing crisis in Kashmir valley has created a very highly charged environment that requires urgent world attention. This was stated by Dr Misfar Hassan president Jammu Kashmir Liberation UK & EU while addressing a fringe event at Labour Conference 2019 in Brighton.
Addressing a well-attended meeting where MPs MEPs Councillors and Labour activists were present he stated that Kashmir is an issue of self-determination that is now being presented only as a Human Rights abuse issue which is not its correct perspective. He said both India and Pakistan agreed in UN Security Council. Over the years both have failed to fulfil their commitments that have led to crisis situation in Kashmir. Violent means adopted by youth supported and aided by certain Pakistan based extremist organisations have led to wide spread human rights abuses.
The recent imposition of curfew in Kashmir after abrogation of article 370 and 35 A has complicated the matter. The emotions are running high there are threats of increased violent activities by historically involved non-state actors is posing great threat to the regional peace that requires immediate attention. Hs asked the British Parliamentarians to play a role in de-escalation of the situation by using their influence on the home office.
The APPG on Kashmir needs to take into considerations diverse viewpoints on finding a way forward on the stalled process of talks.
Government of India needs to take steps to lift the restrictions and bring life back to normality The Government of Pakistan must ensure that its soil is not used by extremist organisations for promoting violent activities.
