Zameer Choudrey’s appointment to the House of Lords celebrated at the High Commission
London: The High Commissioner, Mohammad Nafees Zakaria hosted a Dinner Reception at the High Commission last evening to celebrate the appointment of Zameer Choudrey CBE to the House of Lords. The event was attended by Rt Hon James Cleverly, Chairman of the Conservative Party, Lords, MPs, and Members of the Pakistani community.
In his welcome address, the High Commissioner felicitated Zameer Choudrey on behalf of the Leadership, the Government of Pakistan, Pakistani community in the UK, and on his own behalf. He said Lord Zameer Choudrey is an accomplished British Pakistani and passionate human being, whose contributions to the business and society have been recognized by the United Kingdom and Pakistan. The High Commissioner also appreciated Zameer Choudrey’s role as CEO of the Bestway Group—a lead enterprise providing thousands of jobs and benefiting the economies of the UK as well as Pakistan. He hoped that Lord Choudrey’s presence in the House of Lords would further strengthen Pakistan-UK ties in diverse fields.
Giving an overview of Pakistan economy, Mr Zakaria said Pakistan is rich in natural and human resources and, thus, has great scope and potential to attract foreign investment. With global economic gravity shifting to Asia, Pakistan by virtue of its geographic location could be rightly termed as the centre of economic activity in that region, he stated. He was sanguine that the collective efforts of the Diaspora and the friends of Pakistan would further develop mutually beneficial economic ties between the two countries.
In his remarks, James Cleverly congratulated Lord Zameer Choudrey on his elevation to the House of Lords which was in recognition of his public service. He appreciated Lord Choudrey’s hard work and dedication in developing businesses and promoting bilateral relations between the two countries. Mr Cleverly said the bilateral relationship between our two countries is strong and would go from strength to strength. He said the upcoming Pakistan visit of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge would further demonstrate the strength of Pakistan-UK bilateral relations.
Mr Cleverly wished to see greater bilateral trade and greater cooperation in diverse fields. Mr Cleverly expressed Pakistan-UK relationship is important to both the countries because the large Pakistani Diaspora in this country contributes so much to UK’s economy, culture and society. He said under his Chairmanship his party would continue to encourage and support people of Pakistani heritage to get involved in British politics.
Speaking on the occasion, Lord Choudrey thanked the High Commissioner for the gesture of celebration. He said he is humbled by his elevation to the House of Lords. Lord Choudrey commended the role of the Pakistani Diaspora in the UK but added that they could still do better in various fields including politics and economy. He said enhancement of trade between the two countries would be his area of focus. He expressed delight over the upcoming Royal visit to Pakistan.
